chosen by God

God sent Samuel to anoint David with oil, setting him apart to become king. A young shepherd-musician from Bethlehem, David had strong faith in God that soon showed itself in combat with Goliath, the Philistine giant. David served in King Saul’s court, but eventually Saul’s jealousy forced David to flee.

The second half of 1 Samuel chronicles David’s life as a fugitive in the wilderness and in enemy territory plus Saul’s continuing, willful disobedience of God’s commands. David refused to kill Saul despite opportunities to do so, and Saul eventually committed suicide in battle. The path was finally clear for David to be king.

Paul followed up his first letter to the Christians in Corinth with the letter known as 2 Corinthians. This time he emphasized his own authority as an apostle in order to counter charges from false teachers who had stirred up the young Corinthian church against him. Despite the personal nature of the situation, however, Paul used it as an occasion to continue imparting foundational teachings of Christian faith and ministry. The many important doctrines he touched on could help the church in Corinth solve its problems.
